Arkadelphia's small town atmosphere, yet convenient location to larger cities and its safety record are reasons the town was featured in the "50 Fabulous Places to Raise Your Family: The Best Places to Live, Work, and Play." The area was first settled by Europeans in 1809 by John Hemphill, operator of the nearby salt works, which was Arkadelphia's first industry. The town was known as Blakelytown until 1839 when the name was changed to Arkadelphia. Attractions in the town include the Jones Performing Arts Center on the campus of OBU and the Clark County Historical Museum. Opened in 2011, the Arkadelphia Arts Center hosts exhibits, productions and educational workshops for many organizations in town, including the Caddo River Art Guild, the Poet and Writers Guild, the Little Theatre, the two universities, and Arkadelphia Public Schools. For outdoor recreation, there is the Arkadelphia Aquatic Park. The Ouachita National Forest is 30 miles northwest of Arkadelphia, and DeGray Lake Resort State Park is 8 to 26 miles northwest of the town.
