Lake-Ouachita is a 40,000-acre lake located in the Ouachita National Forest just outside of Hot Spring, Arkansas. Lake Ouachita is known for its scenic beauty and pristine clear waters. Lake Ouachita is the largest man made lake in the state of Arkansas. Bull Shoals Lake is larger, but part of it extends into Missouri. Lake Ouachita, which is pronounced WAH-shi-tah, was created by the damming of the Ouachita River by the Blakely Mountain Dam. It has 975 miles of shoreline and is a popular recreational lake. Activities include swimming, boating, water-skiing, scuba diving fishing for bream, crappie, catfish, walleye, stripers and largemouth bass. Lake Ouachita is known as the Striped Bass Capital of the World. It's completely surrounded by the Ouachita National Forest and is near two other lakes, Lake Hamilton and Lake Catherine. These three lakes, along with DeGray Lake to the south, and the thermal springs of Hot Springs National Park make this area a very popular tourist getaway. Lake Ouachita is quite popular for scuba diving. It features one of the largest crystal veins in the world, and has rare, non-stinging jellyfish and sponges found only in a very few of the cleanest freshwater lakes. Around the lake are picnic areas, hiking trails, campgrounds, a marina with boat rentals, a park visitor center with exhibits and a gift shop.
