Yellville is the county seat of Marion County in north-central Arkansas. It's about 30 miles from the Arkansas-Missouri state line. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,204. Founded in 1835, Yellville is a hub of activity in the summertime when tourists come to fish and canoe Crooked Creek, which runs right through town. Yellvilles City Park offers access to Crooked Creek with a canoe landing, lighted walking trail, ball diamonds and sports court. The town is also known for its annual Turkey Trot Festival, one of the longest-running traditional festivals in the region. The festival is usually held every second weekend of October. The Turkey Trot festival includes a Miss Turkey Trot Pageant, a Miss Drumsticks Competition (best legs), musical entertainment, a 5 kilometer run, a parade and a nationally recognized turkey calling contest sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation. A tradition during the festival of dropping live turkeys from an airplane over the town square has caused a lot of controversy over the years, even involving P.E.T.A. Yellville is also popular for its proximity to the Buffalo National River. During the busy season, Yellville becomes a hub for shopping and lodging for all those visiting this particular region of the Ozark Mountains and the Buffalo National River. Other area attractions include the more than 1,000 caves that exist in Marion County, and the famous "Rush" ghost town located in the Buffalo Point area.

Yellville Weather & Climate

North-central Arkansas, near the Missouri border, lies the Ozark Plateau, an area of rugged hills and deep valleys. It's both the coolest and the driest part of the state, and the seasons are more distinct here than in other areas of the state. The average January temperature is 34.9, and the average July temperature of 79. This area receives an average of 45.20 inches of precipitation each year. More snow falls each winter in this part of the state than in any other. Summers are hot, hazy and humid, with frequent thunderstorms. Arkansas is also prone to weather extremes, such as tornadoes and receives on average 26 each year. It's far enough away from the Gulf Coast to be safe from a direct hit from a hurricane. However, it can get the remnants of a tropical system which dumps tremendous amounts of rain in a short time and may spawn smaller tornadoes.
